Enquadramento
Since their inception in the early 21st century, Alternate Reality Games (ARGs) have been a staple of transmedia storytelling, spanning over several themes and genres and generating a cult following. ARG promoters have enjoyed a freedom to explore the space of play across several media, social contexts and communication intents. The social and collaborative nature of ARGs makes them a potential medium to engage and explore diverse player populations and interactions, to raise community awareness, and mobilise for collective efforts.
Objetivo
This thesis project aims to design an ARG that invites players to explore the concept of identity, both individual and collective, and leads users to reflect on those topics through its narrative beats and play elements. The narrative components would be connected and expanded upon through sharing personal, cultural, and regional experiences between players, rather than relying on their technological proficiency with the videogame medium.
The design challenge of this proposal lies in several fronts:
1) To explore the game design process that stands as a main medium in participatory culture, leading to increased awareness of the self and others;
2) Explore how can we design an intervention for a socio-technical transition through an iterative, participatory process of continued participation, where the participants feed the design cycle in mutual influence;
3) Learn how to conceive social-generative playable story elements that provide support and dissemination for continued player participation and end-user contribution;
4) Synthesise in final reflection over the produced work and process regarding design insights on a playable language/grammar for such media.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
We propose a radical prototyping approach to "Research through Design“, monthly time-boxed, approach, based on the following activity cycle:
A1: read on state of the art
A2: design+prototype quickly
A3: experiment more
A4: listen, observe people interact
A5: document and reflect (a lot!)
A6: write what you think
A7: goto A1
All these supported on cutting-edge methods in HCI/CSCW/Design
