SonoSpace: embodied exploration of 3D space as musical instrument

Enquadramento
Sonic Interaction Design (SID) is a sub-area of HCI that arises from the focus on using sound as the active medium of an interactive experience, either for oriented tasks, or just for creative purposes. Theories of embodiment are also at play, bringing the notion of the human body as the physical medium through which we navigate in space, and experience the phenomena to be interpreted. In this line of research, the design and experimentation of NIMEs (New Interfaces for Musical Expression) emerges as the study of new instruments to create musical compositions, or that can serve as tools to express musical concepts.
Objetivo
The first goal of this project is to explore a tridimensional space as a musical instrument, where the body becomes the main vehicle of musical expression and creation. The user is then invited to physically explore the musical space, creating unique soundscapes through his/her body movements. The body becomes the instrument itself, and the room the space of musical possibilities, from variable harmonic contexts, melody scales, notes or rhythmic patterns. The space of possibilities can also be explored as an individual agent that responds and adapts according to the user’s movements.
The second goal of this project focuses on the expansion of this interaction to multiple users, collaboratively participating in the composition process.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
1. (Sep-Nov) State of the art research - research and document the relevant SoA, publications and software review, for the study of the problem at hand; detailed characterization of the problem to be solved stating specific goals and requirements;
2. (Nov-Dec) Design Proposal - conceiving of an interaction design proposal for the specific context, mapping of assumptions and milestones for the rest of the project; identification of quality attributes, and architectural drivers for the proposed solution, including interaction models and user interface draft
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
A3. (Jan-April) Prototyping - implementation of a proof-of-concept prototype, tuning or corrections based on evaluation results;
A4. (May) Evaluation - definition of evaluation criteria and method; performance of evaluation and analysis of results
A5. (June - July) Statement of Learning - production of paper/thesis with process report and reflection on knowledge production
Condições
