Enquadramento
Interactive Music is a creative concept that intends to play music without instruments.
Imagine you are able to play music, or enable some music effects like a DJ, when you move your hand, or your leg. Or when you approach a wall or a table, or when you touch an object, a bottle of water or a chair.
We have a set of hardware, like an armband with muscle sensors. When you change your hand gesture, or your foot gesture, then you can activate a music. Also we can provide hardware that activates any surface.

Objetivo
The objective of this project is to demonstrate playing music with no instrument. It is an application based project, and requires some creativity.
One can think of playing music when two people touch each other, or when they dance, or when playing box, or pingpong!
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
1. Get to know the hardware
2. Brain Storming for deciding the demonstration
3. Start making the computer or mobile phone application, which is basically a set of music effects or notes that are assigned to each hardware.
4. Develop a tomography algorithm that localize the hand on a table
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2
5. Finalize the application. Users should have an access to a back office where they can assign an action to a signal, e.g. to increase bass when you touch the table
6. Get the data from hardware and connect it to the application
7. Make demonstration
Condições
Students should have some background on Music as the supervisor doesn't have!!
Also some experience on development of windows/smart phone apps is welcome. Student will have some freedom to choose the application, but at the same time it means s/he should be creative and be able to design a demonstration scenario.
To this project, students from Multimedia can also apply.
Observações
Laboratory of Robotics and Mechanism of ISR-UC has close collaborations with the Carnegie Mellon University in the areas related with soft electronics, soft hands, Tactile sensing, Human Machine Interaction, novel interactive concepts, and is constantly looking for talented students to join the team.
In the Laboratory you find an excellent range of prototyping equipment, including four different 3D printers, Laser cutting Machine, Polymer processing equipment for casting sculptures and sensors, a wide range of electronics hardware for human machine interaction.
Students are welcome to visit the lab and the hardware before making a decision. Just send an email to mahmoud@isr.uc.pt
Also since the proposals are advertised also for Erasmus Students, students are advised to talk to us and also to select more than one project from our list as option 2 and 3.
