The 26 letters of the modern alphabet provide an seemingly endless challenge for graphic designers, typographers and illustrators. Redrawing the letters for identity systems, posters and logotypes is a productive way for many designers to approach diverse design projects, examples of this approach can be found in the work of Wim Crowel, Non Format, Erich Brechbuhl and Felix Pfaeffli among many others. The sequence of 26 letters is also a classic way to structure picture books and illustrated children’s books with many examples ranging from the educational to the surreal, such as Edward Gorey’s The Gashlycrumb Tinies. There are also examples of typographic books that use the alphabet as both the content and structure such as Marion Bataille’s ABC3D. This project aims to use the alphabet as a sequence of forms and a sequencial structure to produce an animated and interactive website.
Objetivo
Using the limitations of the alphabet as a basic structuring unit, the aim of this project is to create an interactive and animated website that will take the user through the sequence of letters in an engaging and entertaining way. The purpose of this work is to produce a typographic design that uses time, movement and interaction in order to make a typographic project that fully exploits the possibilities of multimedia design for web. The project will require a simple typographic design for the 26 letters using a modular and/or geometric system of constructing the letters that will then be used as the basis for developing the website.
Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1
- Begin research into geometric and modular typefaces, alphabet books, animation and interaction for web.
- Write the introduction and state of the art.
- Design several possibilities for constructing the alphabet.
- Make a proposal of the chosen alphabet to be used in the project and present a storyboard for how the sequence will unfold.
- Define a work plan for the remaining part of the project.

- Refinement of typographic design.

- Cross platform testing.

- Write the final thesis.

Observações
The student must be able to demonstrate reasonable competence in web design and have an interest in geometric and modular typography.
