Visualising Gameplay Information for Game Design Insights

Enquadramento
The Interaction Design and Game Design areas constitute rich fields of study, with many challenges and methodological open issues. The processing of gameplay metrics in a way that can help produce design knowledge is of key importance in the entertainment computing field, so that game designers can act based on insights on player behaviours and not just on hunches.
The particular context of digital gameplay metrics generates significant amounts of data and poses challenges for finding the most informative visualisations to help designers find what is happening with their game prototypes. In particular, in this proposal, we intend to address the challenge of creating multiple perspectives (time-based, player-based, location-based, event-based, context-based, etc) that can enable visual inspection and discovery of gameplay patterns.
Objetivo
Some of the common insights sought by game designers that might be achieved through visualisation: how players are distributing their attention over the game space; intensity, sequence or repetition of specific actions and in which game context; distribution of players noticing/using some feature across some time window or space range; changes in players behaviour with some profile characteristic or in time; etc.
In this project we want to design and prototype a web-based information visualisation cockpit. Our intention is to extend an existing crowdsourcing framework for gameplay testing, developed at our research center, with an information visualisation module. This new visualisation module should enable the definition of multiples perspectives on existing data logs. Data processing will be made accessible through web services (http) so that they can be combined with a set of visualisation models to enable knowledge discovery.
a) assess current state-of-the-art in information visualisation and gameplay metrics techniques
b) design and build a workable web-based visualisation environment;
c) evaluate the user experience with designs proposals.
