Enquadramento

The increasing digitisation and technological progress, including the adoption and deployment of more and more sophisticated Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based systems and solutions, transform all sectors of our economy and society. To ensure that this transformation will benefit all in a way that warrants security and privacy, research and innovation (R&I) needs to target the definition and development of innovative and advanced security and privacy management mechanisms and technologies that can seamlessly be integrated in a variety of contexts and applications.

ARCADIAN-IoT project addresses this challenge by enabling a holistic framework with components leveraging federated AI, distributed ledger technologies (DLT), functional encryption, eSIM technologies, Cyber Threat Intelligence, and others, for autonomous trust, security and privacy management for IoT systems.

This topic is part of the Autonomous Trust, Security and Privacy Management Framework for IoT (ARCADIAN-IoT) project, coordinated by the Pedro Nunes Institute (IPN), and funded by the European Commission's H2020 program (agreement nº 101020259).

Objetivo

The main objective of this dissertation is to build and evaluate the underlying support system of the ARCADIAN-IoT framework taking into account secure communication requirements (e.g., TLS) and persistence. The scope of this work mainly addresses the integration of ARCADIAN-IoT components and its support systems (e.g., real time messaging platforms). The objectives of this work are the following:

(i) analyze the state of the art on real time messaging platforms (e.g., Apache Kafka, Rabbit MQ, and others), the characteristics of hosting solutions (on-premises, Google Cloud, AWS) and the main features of the main orchestration mechanisms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes);
(iii) implement and test a functional support system for the ARCADIAN-IoT Framework;
(iv) evaluate the solution with in terms of scalability, reliability and robustness.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

[Week 1-8] - Literature review of relevant real time messaging platforms (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pulsar), hosting solutions (on-premises approaches, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and orchestration mechanisms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes);
[Week 9-12] - Familiarization with ARCADIAN-IoT components, interfaces and communication patterns / requirements (e.g., Intrusion Detection System, Self-protection mechanisms, Cyber Threat Intelligence and others);
[Week 13-15] - Specification of the solution;
[Week 16-18] – Definition of the evaluation approach;
[Week 15-20] – Preparation of the master's dissertation interim report.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

[Week 1-6] – Preparation of the environment in accordance with the previously selected orchestration and hosting approach;
[Week 7-10] - Implementation of the selected real time messaging solution and integration with applicable ARCADIAN-IoT components;
[Week 11-13] – Execution of the end-to-end tests of the system;
[Week 14-17] - Evaluation of proposed solution (e.g., scalability tests, functional evaluation), parameter adjustment, tests);
[Week 14-20] - Preparation of the final report.

Condições

The place of work will be at Laboratório de Informática e Sistemas (LIS), Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN).
This work will be integrated into an international research project. The student may apply for a research grant, for a period of 6 months, possibly renewable, with the amount of €875.98 / month.

Observações

During the application phase, doubts related to this proposal, namely about the objectives and conditions, must be clarified with the supervisors, via email or a meeting, to be arranged after an email contact.
