Science4Pandemics (S4P) aims to create a gaming platform to engage young citizens in learning about pandemics, while engaging as citizen scientists in research activities. A strategy of Game-based learning aims to ensure that the educational process is efficient and engaging. This can be achieved by exploring game designs that empower citizens young and old through meaningful life scenarios everyday life and based on theories of behaviour change.

Mixed Reality (MR) merges real and virtual worlds, allowing the interaction between physical and digital objects in real time. While Virtual Reality (VR) creates artificial environments where users are completely immersed and Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital information on the real world in a partially immersive experience, Mixed Reality extends the concept of the latter by enabling a deeper interaction between real and virtual worlds. In a MR environment, real and digital elements interact between them and with the user, providing a more complete experience.

The purpose of this project is to design, develop, and evaluate a mixed-reality (MR) version of the Science4Pandemics game.

While there are various MR devices, in this project we plan to explore the use of smartphone-based MR using the Zapbox Studio development tool and ZapBox MR system.
The ZapBox system is a commercial, low cost system (that uses a smartphone for visualization), composed of cardboard (or bluetooth handheld controllers) and a set of visual markers that are placed on a surface (e.g., table). Figure 1 shows an example of what users see when using the system.

Objetivo

The project entails defining what 3D content users will see in mixed reality, how the 2D interfaces can be displayed in MR, how interaction with the game can take advantage of the 3D/spatial capabilities. It can also entail defining and developing a multi-user version where up to four players share the virtual representation / user interface to play the game.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

- Learn about S4P project and the S4P game
- Study Mixed-Reality (MR) and MR games
- Study Zapbox development platform
- Develop a (technical) prototype of a multi-user MR game
- Write intermediate report

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

- Develop the architecture for the multi-user MR game
- Implement the MR game
- Evaluate the usability and user experience of the resulting game

Condições

Students will have access to the ZapBox system.
