Enquadramento

The work to be performed is integrated within the FCT project DenseNet and aims at the development of energy-efficient, reliable and scalable communication mechanisms for dense networks.

Objetivo

Large-Scale Highly-Dense Networks will emerge to support the IoX (Internet of Everything) vision, a step forward the IoT (Internet of Things) scenario, where there will be a massive number of low power devices performing sensing/actuation on different targets and relaying/forwarding information over different and dynamic topologies (star, mesh, ad-hoc) as well as ultra-dense radio technologies, device-to-device communications, dynamic spectrum utilization and radio access infrastructure sharing. This will be the reality in 5G networks. This highly dense heterogeneous networking scenario can cause a rapid exhaustion on node’s resources and reduce the device and network lifetime due to the huge amounts of data generated and that needs to be transferred across the network. It also poses serious challenges in terms of scalability and reliability. There is thus the need to target efficient communications in dense networks to improve network and node survivability. This can be achieved through the control of relaying and communication functions and the amount and quality of data flowing in the network. The master's thesis work will consist in developing and evaluating algorithms for efficient multi-hop group communications, in combination with data aggregation, replication, and fusion mechanisms in order to improve network reliability and scalability.
