Enquadramento

An investigation about the theoretical fundamentals that connect Architecture and Design with the "Bio-Logics".
It is intended for the interns to develop a connection between the actual biological knowledge and the Design in light of the most recent technological advancements.
The starting premise is that the fusion between the technological and the biological world is presently a reality that cannot be ignored. Informatics and robotics have proven to be capable of releasing the Architects and Designers from a catalogue drawing, based on fixed images, showing us a new field of acting where complex processes, analogue to those occurring in nature, are on the front and allow for a more coherent connection with the living surroundings.

Objetivo

The biomimetic applications to architecture and design, as well as its contextualization, are presented as a first module, with a special attention being given to the geometric and structural methods inspired on living beings. These new theoretical contents which resulted from the study of complexity, which originate mainly from the field of biology and cybernetics, allow for the biological analogies in the field of design and architecture to offer new tools to organize and optimize projects.
In the second module the concepts from the biology field are prospectively analysed. The scientific and technological developments increase the possibilities of experimentation and generate iterative processes that can be comprehended while minding the more relevant theories regarding evolution, the development and self-organization.
In parallel to the theoretical investigations, it will also be taught how to model in Rhinoceros and how to produce generative models for architecture and design with programs such as Grasshopper (Explicit Programming), Rabbit (Generative Algorithms), Kangaroo (structural calculations) and Galápagos (Genetic Algorithms), in order to create compositions and explore the relationship between the generative code and the phonotypical expressions, as well as other proprieties of genetic characteristics, as well as the parameterization and mutation by code recombinations.

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 1

- Revision of existing information regarding the state of the art (obligatory reading of the supervisor's doctorate thesis - free PDF on the Internet).
- Explicit programming of parametric, kinetic and/or reactive models, using programs like Grasshopper (Explicit Programming), Rabbit (Generative Algorithms), Kangaroo (structural calculations) and Galápagos (Genetic Algorithms).
- Elaboration phylogenetic maps of the different models.
- Elaboration of small prototypes corresponding to the main constructive techniques.
- Elaboration and defence of a report of the work accomplished and expectations (preferentially in English, between December 2014 and January 2015).

Plano de Trabalhos - Semestre 2

- Creation of multimedia contents that include the physical prototype and its real or virtual uses, utilizing Amplified Reality visualization techniques.
- Creation, if necessary, of a prototype with 1:1 or 1:2 scale corresponding to the construction technique selected for the final project.
- Elaboration and defence of a report of the work accomplished and respective multimedia contents (preferentially in English, to be presented in thematic conference cycles).
- Elaboration of the thesis and preparation of the presentation of the written document and respective multimedia contents for the defence.

Condições

- The supervisor has created a vast number of projects regarding this thematic during his masters and doctorate thesis, which allows him to provide some models that can serve as a reference for the internship.
- FABLAB Coimbra access - digital prototyping laboratory.
- The supervisor will provide pertinent training for this internship in the DArq during the Virtual Architectures and Modelling and Animation courses in the first semester and during the Plastic Expression and Multimedia chair in the second semester. Whenever there are available spots, the intern will be able to observe and actively participate.
